Communication disorders and special educational needs.

    Autism

    A person with autism has difficulty with social communication, social interaction and social imagination.

    Communication disorder

    People with communication disorders have problems with speech, language or hearing that make it harder for a person to learn or interact with others.

    Learning difficulty

    A learning difficulty is a clear difficulty with reading, writing or maths. For example dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.

    Learning disability

    A learning disability means someone who has a low IQ (less than 70) and significant difficulty with everyday tasks.

    Special Educational Needs (SEN)

    A person has special educational needs (SEN) if they have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most other children of about the same age.
